A compass is used to determine the direction or bearing of an object. It consists of a magnetized needle that is pivoted at its centre such that it turns in a horizontal plane. This is usually mounted above the card in which the cardinal points are marked. N, NE, E, SE.

compass

When the compass is turned to the magnetic east, the needle will be pointing to the magnetic north. Hence, the north pole ‘W’ of the magnetic needle is pointing towards the ‘east’, ‘E’ on the card.
