What is Foundation in Building?

A building foundation is usually a stone or concrete structure that supports a building from underneath. The foundation is the structural base that stands on the ground and supports the rest of the building.

The natural foundation is the ground or sub-soil on which the building stands and the artificial foundation is the expanded base made up of masonry materials, such as concrete block or brick, or with poured concrete.

Foundation is constructed by digging a trench around the footprint of the building, which is then filled with concrete.

Excavation simply means making holes or trenches in the ground by digging up soil.

Functions of Foundation:

i. It carries the weight of a building.

ii. It distributes the weight of the building to the ground effectively.
