The structure that covers a building at the top is called a roof. It protects the occupants from harsh weather, beautifies the building, and reduces heat loss.

Functions/Characteristics of a Roof:

i. A roof should provide protection from the weather, including direct rays from the sun, rain, etc.

ii. The roof must be waterproof.

iii. It should make the building more attractive.

iv. It should resist the passage of sound and heat.

v. A roof should be able to support its load and any other load placed on it.

Types of Roofs:

1. Gable Roof:

Gable roofs have two sloping sides that rise to form a ridge. This type of roof is most easily identified by the triangular shape formed at either end. They can easily shed water and snow and, therefore are ideal in colder climates.
