Linear motion can be obtained with the use of slots and sliders, levers, linkages and many mechanical systems:

i. Slots:

A slot is a narrow and elongated opening on a given surface. This opening can be of different shapes such as triangular, circular, rectangular or square. A slot usually has a corresponding shaped object that can be moved in and out of the slot called a slide.
