Paul Before the Jewish Council (Sanhedrin) (Acts 23: 1-11):
Paul was not able to speak to the crowd and calm them down, they kept on shouting. So the commander ordered him to be taken to the barracks. In the barracks, they found out Paul was a Roman citizen and as a result, had the right to a fair trial. The commander still wanted to know what Paul’s offence was so he released him the next day and brought him before the chief priests and the members of the Sanhedrin who had all been asked to assemble.
The Sanhedrin was the highest Jewish religious ruling and arbitrative authority in the law. It consisted of 71 members and assembled daily in one of the Temple halls.
