  • The Significance of the Church Council at Jerusalem

The Church Council at Jerusalem Council (Acts 15: 1-35):

Certain men visited Antioch from Judea and were teaching the believers there that, “Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.” – Acts 15 verse 1 (NIV). This statement made Paul and Barnabas argue with the visiting men because they (Paul and Barnabas) did not agree with them. The people wanted to know what was right so they appointed Paul, Barnabas and a few other believers to go see the elders and apostles in Jerusalem to get an answer.

They were welcomed by the apostles, elders and church when they got to Jerusalem and they told them about all the good things God had done through them. Some believers were of the party of the Pharisees and they believed a Gentile had to be circumcised and follow the law of Moses. The elders and apostles came together to decide what the truth was about the statement but they could not agree on an answer.
