Democracy is a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.

In 1863, democracy according to Abraham Lincoln, who was the president of America at the time, was defined as “the Government of the people by the people and for the people.”

This means that the people have the authority to choose their governing legislators.
