Independent National Electoral Commission was established in 1998 to oversee elections in Nigeria. The overall head of INEC is called the Chairman.

Every state in Nigeria has a Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) who supervises the conduct of elections at the state level.

History of Electoral Commissions in Nigeria:

Before the establishment of INEC, the administration of democratic elections in Nigeria goes back to the period before Nigeria gained its independence when the Electoral Commission of Nigeria (ECN) was inaugurated in 1958 to conduct the 1959 federal elections.

In 1960, the Federal Electoral Commission (FEC) was established and conducted the elections of 1964 and 1965.
