What is an Adjective?

Adjectives are words that describe nouns and pronouns.

Examples are:

i. She is gentle.

ii. This is a round table.

iii. Wole Soyinka won a very important award.

Types of Adjectives:

1. Qualitative Adjectives:

It tells you something about the quality that someone or something has.

Examples:

a. Mrs. Utomi is a rich woman.

b. The boy is huge.

c. Dr. Etukeno has bought a new car.

2. Interrogative Adjectives:

Interrogative adjectives are used to introduce questions.

Examples:

a. Whose child is that?

b. Who are you?

c. Where are your parents?

3. Descriptive Adjectives:

A Descriptive adjective is used to give more information about the state of a noun or a pronoun.

Examples:

a. The girl is beautiful.

b. The cheerful king.

c. He is a handsome rich man.

4. Demonstrative Adjectives:

Demonstrative adjective demonstrates or points to the noun it qualifies. In the English language, ‘this’, ‘that’, ‘these’ and ‘those’ are used as demonstrative adjectives.
