What is Drama?

Drama is a genre of literature which is meant to be acted on the stage, on television, or heard on the radio.

Drama is the only genre of literature that is meant to be acted on stage by actors and actresses. Drama involves dialogue and actions.

Drama is a part of literature that teaches morals through acting and it equally entertains. It makes use of costumes, props, lighting, and setting. 

Types of Drama:

The types of drama are comedy, tragedy, melodrama, tragic-comedy etc.

Comedy: This is a light-hearted play which ridicules the follies of the characters which instigates laughter and the events lead to a happy ending. 

Tragedy: It is a play that ends sadly. It is full of sorrowful elements, and episodes that show ill luck or mishap. The atmosphere of tragic drama is always serious and tense with an unhappy ending often involving death. 

Melodrama: This is a drama full of sensational events and exaggerated characters often with a happy ending. It always ensures that a good character is rewarded while a bad one is punished. 

Closet-Drama: This term refers to a literary composition which takes the form of a play, but is not meant to be performed on stage. A closet drama is meant to be studied privately “in a closet” (an old term for a small private study or reading room).
