What Semi-Formal Letter?
A semi-formal letter is one that is not strictly informal or formal. It has the features of both informal and formal letters.
It is a letter written to someone who is neither too close nor too far from the writer. It is written to somebody with whom we do not have a personal relationship with but we are close to.
Examples of semi-formal letters are letters written to your boss in the office, teacher, elder, uncle, or pastor.
Features of a Semi-Formal Letter:
1. Writer’s address
2. Salutation/greetings: The addressee’s surname may be used, e.g. Dear Mr. Ajoge, Dear Mrs. Paul, or Dear Sir, it all depends on the relationship existing between you and the recipient.
3. Introduction
4. The body of the letter should be different from that of an informal letter. That is;
- The writer goes straight to the point
- The language is a little bit formal and informal.
5. Do not give a heading to your letter.
6. Conclusion
7. Subscript – Yours sincerely,
- The writer’s surname and the first name
- Signature is not required
