Topic Content:

  • Converting from One Base to Another Other Than Base Ten

Worked Example 1.4.1:

Solve the following:

i. Convert  405six to base two
ii. Convert 10110two to base seven
iii. Convert 321four to base two

Solution

To do this, first, convert the given base to base ten, then convert to the required base.

i. Convert  405six to base two

First, convert to base 10

405six =  4 × 62 + 0 × 61+ 5 × 60

144 + 0 + 5 =  149ten

Then convert 149ten to base 2

= 10010101two

ii. Convert 10110two to base seven

First, convert to base 10

10110two = 1 × 24 + 0 × 23 + 1 × 22 + 1 × 21 + 0 × 20

16 + 0 + 4 + 2 + 0 = 22ten

Then convert 22ten base to 7

Screenshot 2023 08 21 at 15.28.54

= 31seven

iii. Convert 321four to base two

321four = 3 × 42 + 2 × 41 + 1 × 40

48 + 8 + 1 = 57ten

Then convert 57ten to base 2
