Multiplication and Division in Standard Form

To multiply or divide in standard form arrange the number parts together and arrange the powers of 10 together then apply the laws of indices. 

Example 10.4.1: 

Multiply 6.5 × 10³ by 3.5 × 10⁸ giving your answer in standard form. 

Solution 

(6.5 × 10³) × (3.5 × 10⁸)

Rearrange the ‘number parts’ together and the powers of 10 together. 

6.5 × 3.5 × 10³ × 10⁸
