  • Using Laws of Indices

When dealing with calculations involving power of 10 you can use the rules of indices as follows.

a) 10n × 10m = 10n + m

e.g.

(i) 103  × 102 =  103+2 = 105

(ii)  108 × 10-3  = 108+(-3)  = 108-3 = 105

b) 10n ÷ 10 = 10n – m

e.g

(i) 105 ÷ 102 = 105-2  =  103

(ii)  10-4 ÷ 10-7 = 10-4 – (-7)

= 10-4+7  =  103
