1. Raising Awareness:
This is a situation whereby awareness is created for people about the activities of human trafficking. It is an act of enabling people to know and understand the ills of trafficking.
This can be achieved by:
i. Public Enlightenment: This is by educating people and creating awareness through the use of radio and television jingles and other mass media e.g. newspapers and magazines
ii. Organizing seminars, training, and workshops to create awareness for people in order to know all the gimmicks and signs of trafficking so that people will not fall victim.
2. Advocacy:
Advocacy is defined as any action that speaks in favour of, recommends, argues for a cause, supports or defends, or pleads on behalf of others. It involves the establishment of organizations and agencies to help in the eradication of human trafficking and also providing support for the victims.
They include NGOs and other foundations like The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Women Trafficking and Children Labour Eradication Foundation (WOTCLEF). Their functions are to suppress and punish trafficking in persons, especially women and children.
3. Education:
Another way this act can be eradicated is by the establishment of schools and providing educational opportunities to all so that children of the less privileged can also attend schools. Such children would not be used as child labourers or domestic servants.
4. Legislation:
Stiffer and tougher penalties and punishment should be given to those who are perpetrators of Human Trafficking so that people can desist from participating. Also, the National Agency For Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) should work harder in tracking down offenders and make sure offenders are brought to book.
On the other hand, the government should encourage and remunerate all agencies so as to do their work effectively.
5. Creation of Job Opportunities and Infrastructure:
The government should create job opportunities for young graduates and youth. Again, social infrastructure facilities should be developed so that people will not be deceived and enticed by human trafficking agents.
