These are implements which are coupled to a tractor and towed in order to enable them perform their specific functions.

Examples:

Ploughs, Harrows, Ridgers, Cultivators, Harvesters, Planters, Sprayers, Mower, Baler, Fertilizer applicator.

Primary and Secondary Tillage Implements:

Soil tillage is a method of soil preparation in order to provide a suitable medium for crop growth. It can also be defined as the practice of aerating the soil to permit moisture and air to permeate, allowing seeds to germinate, encouraging root growth/crop growth, controlling weed growth, and integrating fertilizers into the soil.

Primary Tillage Implements:

These are implements used to break and turn soil over and in so doing, clods or lumps are formed. For example, Plough.

Secondary Tillage Implements:

These are implements used after ploughing, to break down soil clods or lumps into fine ridges, to create proper soil tilth or to pulverize the soil. Examples include Harrow, Cultivator and Ridger.

Reasons Why Secondary Tillage is Necessary Before Sowing of Seeds:

  • Improves soil water percolation.
  • Provides fine soil for seed germination.
  • Leads to improved soil structure.
  • Aids soil aeration.
