Cutlass:

Description: 

This simple farm tool is commonly used by peasant farmers to carry out agricultural activities. There are two types of cutlasses: one has a slightly curved blade with a short wooden handle, while the other has a straight metal blade and a short wooden handle. One edge of the metal blade is sharp and the other is blunt.

  • The cutlass is used for pre-planting activities such as the cutting down and clearing of grasses, bushes, and trees.
  • For harvesting crops like yam and cassava.
  • It can also be used to plant the seeds of some crops.
  • For weeding farm lands.
  • It can also be a valuable tool for transplanting seedlings.
  • Stem cutting and clearing.
  • For Butchering farm animals.

Maintenance Practices

  • Should be sharpened regularly.
  • Should be kept in a dry and cool place.
  • Metal parts should be oiled or greased before storage.
  • Wash and dry after use.
  • Do not leave the cutlass lying about carelessly.
