Organisation of Life – Theory Questions:

1. State two advantages and two disadvantages of complexity in an organism.

Answer:

Advantages of Complexity:

i. It leads to division of labour.

ii. It brings about more efficiency in the function and adaptation of the organism.

iii. They can adapt to harsh conditions.

iv. Efficient transport of substances in the body. For example, the circulatory system can transport blood in the body without interfering with other systems.

v. They are able to increase in size because there is enough space between cells for growth.

Disadvantages of Complexity:

i. Complex organisms require more resources than simple ones because of their size.

ii. They have a small surface area to volume ratio compared to simple ones, therefore, diffusion is not efficient to supply materials to different parts of the body.

iii. They need a specialized transport system for efficient movement of materials within their body.

iv. The ability to regenerate and grow back lost parts becomes reduced in complex multicellular organisms.

v. Difficulties in reproduction.

2. (a) Name the four levels of organisation in living organisms.

Answer: Cell, tissue, organ, system

(b) Explain two of the levels of organisation named in (a) above

Answer:

A tissue is a collection of cells which are similar in structure and perform similar functions. Some tissues cannot exist on their own but some can live on their own, e.a., Hydra. They have the same origin and occupy the same position in the body of the organism.

An organ is a collection of different tissues that perform a common function or common functions. Some organs carry out a single function. e.g., the heart while others carry out more than one function, e.g., the kidney.

A system is made up of different organs that perform a particular function. Systems are peculiar to higher organisms.
