Carbohydrates are organic compounds composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. The hydrogen atoms present are twice that of the oxygen atom.
The ratio between hydrogen and oxygen in carbohydrates is 2:1
Classification of Carbohydrates:
There are three main groups of carbohydrates:
- Monosaccharides (Glucose, fructose, Galactose)
- Disaccharides (e.g Sucrose, maltose, Lactose)
- Polysaccharides (e.g starch, cellulose)
