Growth is defined as a permanent or irreversible increase in dry weight, size, mass or volume of a cell, organ or organism due to the addition of living protoplasmic materials.
For growth to occur, the rate of building up of materials (anabolism) must exceed the rate of breaking down or catabolism.
Basis of Growth:
For any organism to grow it must pass through these phases;
(i) Cell division
(ii) Cell enlargement
(iii) Cell differentiation
Cell division: (Cell multiplication) In order for a cell to multiply, it has to undergo cell division. Mitosis & Meiosis.
