These refer to areas where water is scarce or difficult to obtain. Arid lands are hot and semi-deserts, cold deserts or tundra.

Characteristics of Arid Lands:

1. Rainfall is very low usually below 250 mm per annum.

2. Desert temperatures are usually very high during the day and very low during the night.

3. Deserts have scanty vegetation with short and scanty grasses and very few trees.
