Topic Content:

  • Meaning of Population Studies
  • Factors Affecting Population Growth
  • Problems Associated with Human Overpopulation

Population studies encompass the study of population dynamics, how and why population changes over time as well as their interaction with the environment. Parameters of a population include dominance, size, distribution, density, frequency and percentage cover.

  • Size: Population size gives an indication of how the population of an organism is surviving in a habitat.
  • Dominance: This refers to the population with the largest size in a community.
  • Distribution: This refers to the pattern in which the population of organisms are dispersed in a habitat.
  • Frequency: Population frequency is defined as the number of times an organism occurs within a given area in its habitat.
  • Percentage Cover: This is the area of ground covered or occupied by a given species in its habitat.
  • Density: Population density is the average number of individuals of a given species per unit area of the habitat, it can be used to determine the population of an organism.

Density × Area of Habitat = Population Size
