Topic Content:
- General Uses of Acids
- Uses of Some Common Acids
General Uses of Acids:
- In the production of salts:
Acids react with bases, alkalis, carbonates, and metals to form salts .
Example:
HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H₂O
- In the dissolution of metals:
Acids dissolve certain metals, especially those above hydrogen in the activity seriesThe activity series is a list of metals arranged in order of decreasing reactivity, from the most reactive at the top to the least reactive at the bottom. Common Activity Series... More , producing a salt and hydrogen gas.
Example:
Zn + 2HCl → ZnCl₂ + H₂
- As electrolytes:
Some acids are used as electrolytes because they conduct electricity in solution.
Example:
Dilute H₂SO₄ is used as an electrolyteAn electrolyte is a substance that dissociates in water into charged particles called ions. Positively charged ions are called cations. Negatively charged ions are called anions. Simply, an electrolyte is a... More in lead–acid accumulators .
- As redox reagents:
Acids can act as oxidising or reducing agents in chemical reactions.
Example:
Trioxonitrate(V) acid (HNO₃) acts as a strong oxidising agent.
Uses of Some Common Acids:
1. Tetraoxosulphate(VI) Acid (H₂SO₄):
- It is used as a heavy chemical in chemical industries.
- It is used in the manufacture of detergents and fertilizers.
- It is used as an electrolyte in lead–acid
