1. Caustic soda, NaOH is used in the manufacturing of soap, salts, plastic, and oils in the refining of petrol.

2. Caustic potash, KOH is used in the manufacturing of liquid soap, dyeing, and electroplating.

3. Slaked lime, Ca(OH)2 is used in making mortar, cement, plaster of Paris, and neutralizing acidic soils.

4. Milk of magnesia, Mg(OH)(aq) – a suspension of magnesium hydroxide in water is used for the following:

(i) As a mild laxative.
(ii) As an antacid in toothpaste to neutralize acidity in the mouth.

5. Ammonium hydroxide, NH4OH is used as a common household cleaner e.g detergents, and in bleaching cloth.
