A buffer solution is an aqueous solution consisting of a mixture of a weak acid and its conjugate base, or vice versa.

It is a solution that resists changes in pH, on the addition of a small amount of an acid or alkali.

The ability of buffer solution to resist change in pH on the addition of acid or base is called Buffer action.

Types of Buffer Solutions:

There are two types of buffer solutions:

1. Acid Buffer:

This is a solution of a weak acid and its salts e.g. a solution of ethanoic acid (CH3COOH) and Sodium ethanoate (CH3COONa).
