Hygroscopic and deliquescent substances absorb moisture from their surroundings. Because of this property, they are used in the laboratory as drying agents to remove moisture from substances.
A desiccant is a substance used specifically for drying. It is usually placed inside a desiccator . Common examples of desiccants include fused calcium chloride (CaCl₂), silica gel, and concentrated sulphuric acid.
A desiccator is a glass container with an airtight lid that contains a desiccant. It is used to keep solid substances dry or to dry solids after heating.
