Substances behave differently when they are exposed to the atmosphere. Some substances like common salt are found to become moistened or wet after some time, while substances like washing soda become dry and some even turn powdery. Others like calcium chloride turn liquid while a few remain unchanged when exposed.
The following phenomena are the characteristic properties of salts:
1. Efflorescence:
This is a process whereby hydrated salts when exposed to air lose part or all their water of crystallization to the atmosphere. Such salts are said to be efflorescent.
