The volume occupied by a gas at standard temperature and pressure (S.T.P) is referred to as molar volume of a gas or gas molar volume.
The value of the molar volume is 22.4 dm3 or 22,400 cm3 at S.T.P
The mole can be expressed in terms of molar volume thus:
1 mole of any gaseous substance = molar volume of a gas at S.T.P
1 mole of hydrogen gas (H2) = 22.4 dm3 at S.T.P
1 mole of CO2(g) = 22.4 dm3 at S.T.P
1 mole of O2(g) = 22.4 dm3 at S.T.P
1 mole of SO2(g) = 22.4 dm3 at S.T.P
Example 6.5.1:
Calculate the volume occupied by 2 moles of carbon (IV) oxide at s.t.p (molar volume = 22.4 dm3 at S.T.P)
