Commerce is mainly the buying and selling of goods and services and all activities that facilitate trade.

The following are the features of commerce.

(a) Commerce contributes to the study of human beings and their activities towards production, distribution, exchange of goods and services and their attitude towards their basic needs and wants, so commerce is also regarded as a social science like economics, sociology, psychology, government, etc. which study human beings and their unpredictable behaviour with their social and legal environment.

(b) Commerce is all about trade and aids to trade.

(c) The Scope of Commerce revolves around distribution and exchange to ensure an equitable supply of goods and services.

(d) Commerce is an integral part of economic and business activities in an economy or a country through an advanced stage of trade.

(e) Commerce at the initial stage took the form of goods exchange for goods or services which is referred to as trade by barter. Modern commerce is enhanced by the use of money for the exchange of goods and services through an element of the barter system called countertrade.

(f) Commerce is all about the enhancement of human survival and the growth of a nation through improved various commercial activities.

(g) Commerce is mainly the buying and selling of goods and services and all activities that facilitate trade.

  1. Economic activity, profit motive, marketing, utility and business components all show that commerce is an integral part of human life. What is more poignant is that every trade activity depends on each of these characteristics.
