This is the organ of the federal government charged with the responsibility of providing facilities and controlling the seaports in the country. The following are some of its functions:-

1. Facilities like forklift, truck, cranes, and other numerous equipment for speedy loading and unloading of goods from and into the ship are provided by the Nigerian ports authority.

2. They also provide accommodation for officials of immigration, customs, shipping companies, etc.

3. Warehouse for storage of goods are also provided by them.

4. The dredging of the channels of ports in order to provide clear access for ships into deep water is carried out by NPA.

5. They provide general control and administration of all the seaports in the country.

6. Security for ships and cargoes in the warehouse is provided by the ports authority.
