Definition of Mining:

Mining is the extraction of minerals from the ground. Minerals are valuable resources that are found buried in underground layers of the earth and the process of bringing them out is called mining. Nigeria is richly blessed with a variety of minerals.

Types of Minerals:

The major types of minerals resources can be classified under the following categories;

1. Mineral fuels.
2. Iron and non-ferrous metals.
3. Ferroalloy metals.
4. Other metallic minerals.
5. Some unusual metals.

Coal mining Nigeria
Coal Mining.

Minerals present and mined in Nigeria include;

1. Petroleum as Crude oil and Gas: They are found in Port-Harcourt (River State) Warri (Delta State) and Ugheli (Delta State).

2. Coal: It is found in Enugu and Benue State.

3. Iron ore: It is found in the Itakpe (Kogi-State) and Aladja (Delta State), Cross River.

4. Tin and Columbite: Found in Jos (Plateau State), Kogi, Kano, Nasarawa, Kaduna, and Bauchi states.

5. Limestone: Found in Ewekoro in Shagamu (Ogun –State), Ukpila (Edo State) Calabar, Nkalagu, Enugu.

6. Lead and Zinc: Found in Abakaliki (Ebonyi State), Bauchi, Abia, Enugu.

7. Clay: Bornu state, Kaduna, Ondo.

8. Copper: Kano State.

9. Marble: Katsina State, Kwara, Kogi, River state.

10. Gold: States that have gold resource deposits are, Abuja, Abia, Bauchi, Cross River, Edo, Osun, Niger, Sokoto, Kebbi, Oyo State, Kogi, Zamfara, and Kaduna.

11. Barite: Barite deposits can be found in Gombe, Zamfara, Plateau, Cross River, Nasarawa, and Taraba.

Methods of Mining:

1. Opencast mining method.
2. Shaft and underground method.
3. Quarrying.
4. Drilling.
