When Two-Syllable Words Are Stressed on the Second Syllable:

Rule 1: If the first syllable of a two-syllable word is a single letter, the stress falls on the second syllable.

  • aROUND
  • aWAY
  • oFFENCE
  • eSTATE
  • oPPOSE
  • eLITE
