- Speech Writing II
In our previous lesson in speech writing, we explained that a speech could be a welcome or a farewell address. It could also be a talk on any issue of interest. We also discussed the five features of a speech, namely, the heading or title, the salutation, the body, the signature, and the speech maker’s full name.
Here is a welcome address presented by the Senior Prefect of a college to its new principal. Read it carefully, paying attention to the formal features.
An Address of Welcome Presented to Mr. Bayo Lawal, the New Principal of Owo Grammar School, Ondo State, by Master Kola Ade, the Senior Prefect of the College, During the Principal’s First Formal Meeting with the Students of the College at the School Hall on 15th January, 1988.
Our Honourable Principal, Mr. Bayo Lawal,
Respected Members of Staff,
Fellow Students,
Ladies and Gentlemen.
Today marks a new phase in the community of the administration of this ancient institution. We are greatly honoured to have in our midst a distinguished teacher and school administrator, Mr. Bayo Lawal, who has arrived to take up the principalship of this College.
Mr. Lawal, my fellow students, and I consider your posting to our college as a wonderful privilege. We have, therefore, organized this special meeting to express our delight and to give you a warm reception. We heartily welcome you to this college.
