Speech Work: Words of Four Syllables Stressed on the First
Rule I
Stress the first syllable of a word that ends in ‘osm’ or ‘ism’ if the word has three or four syllables. Examples include TRIbalism, ORganism, MIcrocosm, PEssimism, MOdernism, Animism, COmmunism.
Rule II
Stress the first syllable of a word which ends in “ble” if;
1. the word has four or more syllables.
2. the first syllable is neither a single letter nor a prefix.
Examples include CULtivable, NAvigable, VEnerable, VEritable, CHAritable, MEmorable, COMfortable, SERviceable, MOtorable, HAbitable, PErishable.
