What is Communalism?

Communalism is a socio-political system based on common ownership of land in which the sense of togetherness in the community is the factor for unity. It can also be defined as a system in which the mode of production, the land, and what it produces belong to all members of the community and are equally shared or distributed to all.

Participation in community development is open to everyone.

It operates in a primitive, less advanced society.

Features of Communalism:

Features of Communalism Include:

(i) Collective ownership of land/resources.

(ii) Land is used for economic benefit.

(iii) Members of communes are equal. No lordship or low class.

(iv) There is a feeling of togetherness, oneness, and brotherhood which promotes and protects people’s interests and welfare.

(v) Each member of the community contributes to the development of the society.

(vi) Every member of the society shares a common cultural and traditional identity within the context of the traditional political system.

(vii) Communalism is a common feature of the village setting,
