1 (a) Define communalism

Answer:

Communalism is a socio-political system based on ‘Communal’ ownership of land for common use and benefits.

(b) Give six features of communalism 

Answer:

  • Collective ownership of the means of production
  • Communal co-operation in production processes
  • No private ownership of land is allowed
  • Communal societies share the same culture
  • Communal system is practicable in rural settings.
  • Communal societies share the motto: all for one and one for all.

 

2 (a) Define socialism

Answer:

Socialism can be defined as a political-economic system where most of the means of production, exchange, and distribution are owned and controlled by the state.

(b) Highlight six features of socialism

Answer:

(i) In socialist states, there is state ownership and control of the means of production.

(ii)  In socialist states, there is no economic rivalry among producers.

(iii) Labour is not saleable in this system

(iv) Production in this system is not meant for sale

(v) All means of production are employed to produce all goods and services for the people.

(vi)  Income is distributed according to the people’s contributions and needs.

 

3. State three (3) merits and three (3) demerits of socialism.

Answer:

Merits of Socialism

  • The socialist system leads to a more equitable distribution of resources among the citizens.
  • The system takes care of everyone in the state.
  • The system prevents unhealthy economic rivalry among producers.

Demerits of Socialism

  • In this system, there is no freedom of enterprise
  • The system kills individual initiatives.
  • The system does not encourage inventions and innovations.

 

4 (a) Define communism

Answer:

Communism can be defined as a political-economic system where all the means of production exchange and distribution are owned and controlled by the state.

(b) Identify six (6) features of communism.

Answer:

  • In a communist state, there is total ownership of the means of production.
  • The communist state is classless i.e. no societal classes
  • A communist state has only one state political party
  • A communist state exercises a defacto sovereignty
  • Resources are distributed according to the people’s needs and contributions
  • The economy of a communist state is centrally planned.

 

5. Explain the following terms.

(i) Proletariats 

Answer:  These are set of people in a society who are poor but have only their labour to make a living.

(ii) Bourgeoisies  

Answer: These are classes of people who are privileged to own capital and businesses to employ labour.

(iii) Marxism-Leninism 

Answer:  Marxism – Leninism is a political philosophy that believes that a state must pass through two stages: (i) Capitalism and that capitalism will eventually collapse through the bourgeois revolution then move to the second stage of Socialism which will eventually lead to Communism.
