Authority

What is Authority?

Authority is the legal right to command and exact obedience without the use of force.

Authority is having the legitimate right to hold power.

Types of Authority:

(i) Political Authority: It is the legal right to administer the affairs of a state. Right to make, enforce and interpret the law in a state. This power is exercised by political leaders irrespective of the sanctions the ruler may possess.

(ii) Legal-Rational Authority: Legal-rational authority has the constitution as its source and is usually exercised by the arms of government.

(iii) Charismatic Authority: Exceptional qualities an individual possesses can attract this type.

(iv) Traditional Authority: Traditional authority is based on customs and traditions of the society and is exercised by traditional rulers, the council of elders or council of chiefs, etc.

(v) Positional/Hierarchical Authority: The position one occupies comes with authority.

(vi) Delegated Authority: A superior officer may delegate authority to a subordinate to exercise on his behalf.

(vii) Military Authority: Military authority is exercised by the use of force to maintain internal and external security.

Answer:

Authority is simply defined as the legal right to command obedience.

 

(2) Explain five types of authority.

Answer:

  • Political Authority: The type of authority or legal rights to make and enforce laws in a state.
  • Coercive Authority: This type of authority involves the use of force. The military is a good example of exerting its authority on the masses through fear.
  • Traditional Authority: This is the type of authority legitimized by the customs and traditions of the people.
  • Positional Authority: This type of authority is bestowed on someone based on the position such a person is occupying at the time.
  • Charismatic Authority: This is the type of authority that is based and acquired through the possession of some special qualities that endear the person to the masses which then transfers the legal rights to control them to that individual.
