What is Republicanism?

Republicanism form of government is a type of government headed by a president elected for a fixed term of office. The leaders are elected and succession to power is through an election.

Features of Republicanism:

Features of the republicanism form of government include;

(i) Government is by the consent of the people. There is popular representation.

(ii) Succession to office is through free and fair election not hereditary.

(iii) Their leaders are elected periodically.

(iv) Responsiveness and accountability of political office holders are very necessary.

(v) The constitution is supreme and the leaders strictly adhere to the provisions of the constitution.

(vi) There is a fixed term of office for all political office holders including the head of state. The fixed tenure/term maximum is two years.

(vii) There is respect for popular sovereignty as political power resides with the people who can vote out any bad government.
