Meaning and Features of Political Parties
Political Party is an organized group of people who share a common ideology, principles, and interests with the sole aim of gaining control of political power. It is a group of people that seek to control the government e.g. APC, PDP, NPN, UPN, etc.
Features of Political Parties:
(i) Political Parties need to be well organized to achieve their aim. They have a caucus, a youth wing, a women’s wing, etc.
(ii) Party manifestos attract membership and supporters to Political Parties. The Party manifesto contains the programmes and cardinal plans of the party.
(iii) Parties contest elections to gain control of political power.
(iv) It also nominates candidates that will represent the party in the general election e.g Party Flag bearers.
(v) Political Parties organize mini elections within the party to select candidates that will be their flag bearers in a general election. e.g. Party Primary Election.
(vi) They also organize campaigns and rallies to mobilize support and voters.
(vii) Parties have their ideology, philosophy, and system of thought. These they pass on to the electorate.
(viii) Political Parties annually organize party congresses and conventions where major decisions affecting the party are taken.
(ix) Another important feature is purposeful and disciplined leadership that will help the party achieve its aims.
(x) Party constitution directs the Party’s affairs.
