  • Genres of Literature

These are categories of literary composition. Genres may be determined by literary technique, tone, content or even length. In other words, it’s a type or style of literary work.

There are Three Genres in Literature; Prose, Drama, Poetry;

1. Prose: This is a narrative piece of writing which applies a natural flow of speech to the very end without any form of rhythmic structure as in the case of poetry.

2. Drama: This is a genre of literature that deals with the re-enactment of life. it is an imitation of human experience achieved through the unity of time, place and action. The basic elements of drama are plot, characters, actions, acts/scenes, and setting.

Dialogue distinguishes drama from other genres and elicits action which is central to drama.

3. Poetry: It is artistic writing that attempts to stir a reader’s imagination or emotions through the deployment of certain devices such as stanzas and verses, rhyme and rhythm, metres, figures of speech and feeling.
