- Background of the Poem “The Caged Bird”
“Caged Bird” is set within the African American perspective of twentieth-century America where African Americans were forcefully made to realize that America was not their fatherland because of their slave origin. Rather they were subjected to play second fiddle and treated as Second-Class Citizen (Racial discrimination).
The poet uses the “Caged Bird” to represent the African American/the black, while the “Free Bird” represents the white Americans. “I know why the caged bird sings” suggests that the person will tell why the caged bird sings.
