  • Background of the Poet/Poem | "Bat" by D.H. Lawrence

David Herbert Lawrence was born in 1885 in Nottinghamshire, England, to a coal miner. He was a poet, novelist, playwright and journalist. The poem “Bat” was printed in his collection entitled Birds, Beast and Flowers. It is an experimentation of his hands at free verse poetry.

D.H. Lawrence wrote the poem at a time when English poetry was transiting from the romantic poetry of the nineteenth century to the modernist period which was the twentieth century, to manifest the numerous effects
