An Ode to the African Continent:
“Black Woman” is a negritude poem by Senghor in praise of the African continent. In as much as he writes this poem to praise the African continent, he also uses this poem to address the subject of racial discrimination against the black race. He does not write at length about the prejudices of the whites over the blacks, but greatly revolts against them. He highlights and explores the beauty of the African continent. He calls Africa “The Promised Land”. He brings out some mineral resources and endowment on African soil “oil that no breath ruffles”, “the glinting of red gold…” “pearls are stars on the night of your skin”.
