  • Elements of a Set

The members of a set are often called elements of a set.

Note that we use capital letters to stand for the set and small letters for the elements while curly brackets {} are used to contain the set.

Example:

List the elements of the sets

A = {2, 4, 6, 8, … 48}

B = {1, 2, 3, 4, …}

The Number of Elements in a Set

The symbol used in depicting the number of elements in a set A is n(A).

If A = {whole numbers between 2 and 10}, find the number of elements in the set n{A}.

Solution

A = {3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9}

n(A) = 7.

Note that elements 2 and 10 are not included in set A, this is because we used the word between. Also, note that the commas serve the purpose of ensuring the number of elements in a set.
