Definitions:
- Curved Surface Area: This refers to the area of the cone’s lateral surface, which is the curved part that extends from the base to the apex (top point).
- Base Area: This refers to the area of the circular base of the cone.
- Total Surface Area: This is the combined area of both the curved surface and the base.
Curved Surface Area:
The base area of a cone is not typically included when calculating its curved surface area because the term “curved surface area” refers specifically to the area of the cone’s lateral (side) surface, excluding the flat base. The curved surface area represents the area of the cone’s “shell”.

When a sector of a circle is bent into a cone, the sector’s radius becomes the cone’s slant height, and the sector’s arc length becomes the circumference of the cone’s base.
By joining the radii OB and OA together, the sector’s radius becomes the slant height, and the arc length (AB) becomes the circumference of the cone’s base.
