Worked Examples – Reading a Vernier Calliper / Micrometer Screw Guage

Worked Example 1:

What is the reading of the vernier caliper as shown in the figure below?

Reading of the main scale (before 0 on Vernier scale) = 10.0 cm

Reading of vernier scale = 2                  

Reading of vernier scale x accuracy of vernier calliper  

= 2 x 0.01 cm  =  0.02 cm

Final reading = Main scale + Vernier scale

10.0 cm + 0.02 cm = 10.02 cm

Worked Example 2:

What is the reading of the vernier caliper as shown in the figure below?

Reading of the main scale (before 0 on Vernier scale) = 4.3 cm

Reading of vernier scale = 5                  

Reading of vernier scale x accuracy of vernier calliper

= 5 x 0.01 cm = 0.05 cm

Final reading = Main scale + Vernier scale = 4.30 cm + 0.05 cm

Therefore, reading of vernier calliper is  4.35 cm.

Worked Example 3:

What is the reading of the micrometer meter screw gauge as shown in the figure below?

Reading of the main scale = 3.00 mm

Reading of vernier scale = 9

Reading of vernier scale x accuracy of vernier scale = 9 x 0.01 mm = 0.09 mm

Add the result of the main scale and (vernier scale x accuracy of vernier scale) to get the reading of the micrometer screw gauge.

=  3.00 + 0.09 =  3.09 mm

Reading of the micrometer meter screw gauge  = 3.09 mm

Worked Example 4:

What is the reading of the micrometer meter screw gauge as shown in the figure below?

Reading of the main scale = 22.0 mm

Reading of vernier scale = 33              

Reading of vernier scale x accuracy of vernier scale 

= 33 x 0.01 = 0.33 mm

Add the result of the main scale and (vernier scale x accuracy of vernier scale) to get the reading of the micrometer screw gauge.                    

=  22.0 + 0.33 = 22.33 mm

Reading of screw guage = 22.33 mm

Worked Example 5:

What is the reading of the micrometer meter screw gauge as shown in the figure below?

Reading of the main scale = 7.50 mm

Reading of vernier scale = 22

Reading of vernier scale x accuracy of vernier scale = 22 x 0.01 mm = 0.22 mm

Add the result of the main scale and (vernier scale x accuracy of vernier scale) to get the reading of the micrometer screw gauge.

=  7.50 + 0.22 =  7.72 mm

Reading of the micrometer meter screw gauge  = 7.72 mm
