The work done, w, in moving a charge from one point to another when a potential difference p.d in volts is applied is

W = QV——————- (I)

but Q = It

                    ∴ = VIt —————– *

    = IVt—————— (II)

Where I = current in amperes 

t – seconds (time)

from Ohm’s law,

V = IR ———————

Substituting V in eq (II)

W = I.IRt

    = \( \scriptsize I^2RT \) —————— (III)

also  V = IR

I = \( \frac {V}{R} \)

Using equation: II

∴ W = IVt

  = \( \frac {V^2t}{R} \)————– (IV)

Electrical energy is measured in Joules.
