# Electrical Work Done, Energy & Power

In an electric circuit, work is done when electricity flows from a point of higher potential to a point of lower potential.

The work done, W, in moving a charge from one point to another when a potential difference p.d in volts is applied is

W = QV _____ (1)

but Q = IT

∴ = VIT

W = IVT ______(2)

Where I = current in Amperes

t = seconds (time)

from Ohm’s law,

V = IR

Substituting V in eq (2)

W = I.IRt

W = $$\scriptsize I^2RT$$ ____ (3)

also  V = IR

I = $$\frac {V}{R}$$

Using equation (2)

∴ W = IVt

W = $$\frac {V}{R} \scriptsize \: \times \: V \: \times \: t$$

W = $$\frac {V^2t}{R}$$ ____ (4)

Electrical energy is measured in Joules.
