Digestion begins at the mouth (buccal or oral cavity), passes through the pharynx, oesophagus or food pipe, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and finally ends at the anus.

The food particles or bolus gradually get digested as they travel through various compartments of the alimentary canal.

The table below shows a summary of digestion in the human alimentary canal.
