Question:

1. State the functions of the following parts of the human alimentary canal:

i. Mouth
ii. Oesophagus
iii. Pharynx
iv. Stomach
v. Small intestine
vi. Large intestine

Answer:

i. The Mouth contains the teeth and salivary glands. The teeth masticate the food while the salivary gland produces saliva to soften the food and also contains the enzyme Ptyalin to digest starch.

ii. Pharynx leads to the Oesophagus and trachea through the larynx. A flap called epiglottis prevents food from the Pharynx from falling into the trachea.

iii. Oesophagus: Food travels down the muscular wall of the oesophagus into the stomach. The Zig-zag movement of food in the Oesophagus is called PERISTALSIS.

iv. Stomach is a muscular organ which receives food from the oesophagus. The food is beaten down to a paste-like form in the stomach. The gastric gland produces gastric juice which contains enzymes for digesting protein. It contains HCL to provide the optimum pH level for proteases to function efficiently.

v. Small intestine: contains intestinal juice. The juice contains all enzymes for digesting nutrients to their final end product.

vi. Large intestine: The walls of the colon reabsorb water from the undigested waste. The waste is temporarily stored in the rectum.
