- Mechanism of Breathing in Man
Inspiration / Inhalation:
When we breathe in the following events occur:
1. The pillar muscles of the diaphragm contract, thereby flattening the diaphragm i.e. it changes from a dome shape to a flat shape. The volume of the chest cavity increases.
2. At the same time the external intercostal muscles contract while the internal intercostal muscles relax.
